NEW: More residents eligible
Changes in state regulations have almost doubled the number of local residents eligible to be part of the Menominee-Delta-Schoolcraft Community Action Agency Foster Grandparent Program, according to local program director Mary Bunnin.
Past guidelines called for FGP volunteers to be 60 years old or older. New guidelines have dropped the age requirement to 55. New rules also require a volunteer’s maximum income not to be more than $21,660. If husband and wife, the couple’s maximum combined income can’t exceed $29,140, Bunnin said.
Foster Grandparents provide person-to-person services to children with exceptional and special needs in schools, juvenile detention centers and Head Start. Following 40 hours of orientation and training, Foster Grandparents are assigned and work and average of 15-40 hours per week. Foster Grandparents receive:
► Nontaxable stipend
► Transportation or reimbursement for travel costs
► A meal each workday
► An annual physical examination
► Ongoing training
► Excess auto coverage for volunteers driving their own vehicles
► Accident and personal liability insurance
► Paid holidays
► Recognition for their services
Residents wishing to sign up for the program or receive more information should call (906) 786-7080 or email fostergrandparents@mdscaa.org
