My first year as the Executive Director of MDS Community Action Agency has been very productive with many projects coming to the forefront.
In early 2016, the MDS Community Action Agency underwent a strategic planning process where our Board of Directors and staff took a comprehensive look at the direction of our agency. The strategic planning process included a review and update of our mission statement and values. Goals for the agency were set in the areas of family education, efficient and effective use of technology, cross training, marketing CAA, updating senior centers, community collaboration and fund-raising.
In addition to developing a three-year strategic plan, MDSCAA compiled a comprehensive community needs assessment that took a specific look at the people living in poverty in our three-county service area. It is the mission of MDSCAA to help people move out of poverty and become or remain self-sufficient.
Several key findings were the result of seeking information in the community assessment. Families are concerned about accessing health insurance. Families identified a need for help with paying their utility bills, and getting a job that provided benefits. Additional concerns included having no money saved for retirement, housing options, and access to transportation. The need for more jobs that offer a livable wage remains a top concern.
In fiscal year 2015-16, MDS Community Action Agency had a total budget of $9 million. We provided service to our communities through our weatherization program, heat assistance, senior volunteer programs, senior centers, nutrition program, personal care assistance, adult day services and our early childhood program (which includes Head Start and Early Head Start). We also added a program that assists people who are homeless obtain appropriate housing.
The Head Start/Early Head Start Program had full enrollment. The program also provided services to 4-year-old children in the community through preschool options. We provided tax credit assistance to 212 elderly individuals through our senior centers. We repaired 37 family homes, making them more energy efficient. Our senior volunteer programs provided 131,263 hours of service throughout our communities, including area elementary schools, hospitals, nursing homes, blood mobiles, and homebound seniors, just to name a few sites. We also provided heat assistance during our extremely cold winter to 1,307 individuals. We continue to partner in our communities through local community collaborative councils, including local planning bodies for homeless services, Early Childhood Councils and the Family Coordinating Councils. It is our goal to stay close to the ground in our communities to monitor and meet needs of working and often times struggling families and individuals.
The Board of Directors and staff are committed to bringing the best possible services to our three-county service area of Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft. With the help of all CAA employees, our goal will be to both maintain services and, when necessary, change with the times, reaching out to new potential clients and better serving the ones we have.
